DD08 once again presents all that's great and good in South East London design, ranging from quirky to downright spectacular events, challenges, and activities from mid September 2008. It's another ingenious showcase of cutting-edge design which illustrates for the fifth year in a row Deptford's consistently impressive showcasing of local talent. Centred in the heart of SE8 next to The Deptford Project's buzzing train carriage bistro and in the streets of Creekside, DD08 will provide an opportunity to meet and mingle with a diverse mixture of established and up and coming designers and designer makers.
If home is where the heart is then The Deptford Project site and its gaffs are the veritable front rooms beating with SE8's vibrant life source. The collection of wooden huts were initially commissioned by Design for London for the Open City exhibition and have been transported to a new home in the old railway yard next to Deptford High Street station. Four locally-based designers will be transforming the huts into a series of intimate outdoor spaces to provide shelter for visitors and friends. Surprises in store therefore from: bespoke wallpaper designer, Linda Florence - talented and highly renowned with a passion for pattern, print and the 1980s; Toby and David from &made - one of the UK's freshest consultancies for ethically conscious contemporary design; Phoebe Jenkins - a vibrant multi discipline graphic designer and producer who has worked her magic on past festivals, and a team from Goldsmiths' past and Deptford designer's present who include: Katy Hogarth, Oliver Bishop-Young and Stuart Bannocks working their own style of gorgeous gaffing....
After an early rise and a hearty Deptford Café breakfast at 7am on the 19th September, 7 teams of talented young designers will invite visitors to witness them conceive and create their design masterpieces. In a project entitled '24hr designandmake' the works in progress will be inspired by the disused railway arch surroundings and historical 19th century carriage ramp over a short, sharp 24 hour timeline. A novel and interactive way to show designers at work and less stagnant than an already completed showcase.
The weekend of 20-21 September will also see a design packed extravaganza from Cockpit Arts opening their Creekside doors to 65 designer-makers' work spaces between 11am and 6pm, to reveal a labyrinth of jewellery, fashion and interior products. There will be design demos, mini exhibitions or installations by designers including: the kooky ballgown in bag maker/designer Debbi Little; folky and funky homestyle Lush Designs: beauty and comedy inspired textile designer Naomi Ryderas as well as a pop-up café by East Dulwich Deli.
Back at The Deptford Project Café's creative headquarters you'll be able to gen up on all that is anything and everything design and creative wise in the area whilst tucking into the local and organically sourced edibles served in London's grooviest train carriage cafe.
